关于创作意图和命名意义，在《hit》2007年9月的第51页有James的新专辑揭秘，可以看一看，以下是摘录杂志上的话：

Q:先说说发行的新单曲吧！
A:
《1973》这首歌是关于人们对过往生活的回忆，因为毕竟那些时候影响了一个人今后的走向。歌曲中有一种知道自己再也不能回到过去的怀旧情绪，因为那的确是一段值得回忆的美好时光。或许不少人都可以从中找到共鸣——虽然没有希望可以回归过去，但是这首歌还是可以被看作是一种对生活的庆祝。

Q:创作《1973》的灵感是什么呢？
A:创作它的时候，我经常在一个酒吧呆到很晚，然后有一天，我早上才回家，坐在钢琴前面，歌曲的旋律就自然而然地流淌出来了，我觉得它捕捉到了上个世纪七十年代的音乐元素。

Q：创作这首歌用了多长时间呢？
A：记不清了，因为当时我喝醉了。
